Topics covered in the first half of PB 102

1. Diversity of Life
2. Origin of Life and fossil record
3. Ecology/Environmental Issues

1. Diversity of Life

Kingdoms (Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, Protista, Plantae, Animalia, Fungi) plus viruses

Alternation of generations

Cell types -- prokaryote vs eukaryote

Be able to determine what organisms belong to a particular kingdom

Know about economic and ecological importance of members of the different kingdoms

Know the different groups of algae by name or division

Know the different groups of plants by name or division

Especially be aware of the key characters that define a group of plants and the relative order they have in the fossil record

2. Origin of Life

Conditions of early planet

What appeared when?

Prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells

3. Ecology and Environmental Issues

Biodiversity

what, why, how?

the human part of the equation

3. Ecology and Environmental Issues continued

Energy flow

the food web -- know the different components

trophic levels and how they relate to the big picture

Nutrient cycles

carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen, water

limiting factors (or resources)

the human part of the equation

Relationships within ecosystems

populations -- size, natality, mortality, immigration, emigration

competition, predation, herbivory, parasitism, mutualism

Succession

primary vs secondary

pioneer vs climax species
