Ecological Impact of Timber Industry

Disturbance of natural ecosystems -- affects plants and animals that depend on the environment for survival (e.g., environmentalists and the spotted owl vs. timber industry)

Disturbance of watersheds -- erosion of soil, reduction in water retention, flooding, worsening of water quality

Industrial pollution -- sawmills, papermills, other industries associated with timber industry have their troubles with water and air pollution


Economic Importance of Timber Industry

Building materials -- houses, furniture, etc.

Paper products

Firewood for heating and cooking

Horticulture

Recreation (camping, hiking, skiing, and industries associated with these activities)

Musical instruments -- softwoods and fine grains of spruce and redwood especially important
