Review of Lecture 24: Not by bread alone: Aboriginal use of drug plants.

1. Ethnobotany: study of aboriginal use of plants.

2. Secondary metabolites: compounds produced that aren't involved in photosynthesis and respiration; used as protection from predation.

3. Alkaloids: nitrogen containing, cyclic compounds.

4. Peyote, Psilocybe, Opium, Coca, etc.

5. Effects: mild (medicinal) to stimulant to hallucinogen to poison.

5. Uses of drug plants VERY different in aboriginal cultures compared to modern cultures.
