Miscellaneous Notes on Gene Expression

Gene = length of DNA that carries a message for a protein or specific type of RNA

The paradigm of gene expression:

DNA --> RNA --> Protein

DNA --> RNA = TRANSCRIPTION

RNA polymerase must be able to bind to promoter of gene for transcription to start

Transcription regulated by many different factors (e.g., environmental signals)

RNA --> Protein = TRANSLATION

Ribosomes and tRNAs and amino acids all play a role in translation

Translation regulated by many different factors, also (e.g., how many RNA transcripts are available)

Timing of gene expression is the key to development

Rate of gene expression determines the amount of product made

Rate + timing of gene expression is the key to development and cell differentiation
